Antivirus 101: How an antivirus protects your PC

Posted on 23:03 by Unknown
Purchasing a desktop, laptop or a tablet PC often involves more than just deciding what hardware to choose. Since both hardware and software are almost equally responsible for device performance, consumers need to be well informed about options on hand. Fortunately, most computing devices are pre-packaged with all the basic software in use today. This includes a document reader/ editor, image viewer/editor, audio/video player, internet browser and antivirus software, to name a few. Of all these, the antivirus is of utmost importance for obvious reasons. In this post, we will attempt to understand how an antivirus works to protect your PC. Antivirus support service is available for resolving any outstanding antivirus-related issues with your computer.

An antivirus is a piece of software that prevents, detects and removes malware from a computer. Malware is a generic term encompassing viruses, worms, Trojan horses, spyware, adware, ransomware and the like. Basically, any software with malicious intent toward your PC could be termed malware. Simple as that!

In order to work effectively, an antivirus has to differentiate between malware and legitimate software. One technique is to compare program code with that recorded in an existing database of known malware. This is called signature-based detection as it involves comparing program ‘signatures’- segments of code within the program. Current signature databases are pretty exhaustive, thus, a good antivirus program will be able to protect your PC from all documented malware.

However, new virus definitions are released every day, necessitating frequent updates to signature databases. Termed as zero-day threats, these viruses attack a segment of users, who can choose to report these attacks anonymously to the antivirus provider. Through reverse engineering, antivirus developers trace the attack back to the virus code and then update signature database accordingly. For continued PC protection, you must ensure your antivirus software downloads these updates as they become available. If automatic updating is enabled, you are fine. If not, you need to prompt the antivirus program manually to update itself. Manual updating is a wise choice if you want to be in control of when the antivirus consumes maximum internet bandwidth.

There are other heuristic approaches to counter zero-day threats. Some antivirus programs are able to identify new viruses by comparing their code with variations of existing virus definitions. Some of them run suspicious programs in a ‘sandbox’, isolated from the computer OS, to observe their activity. Termed sandboxing, this approach identifies potentially dangerous programs before the latter can cause any harm. Today’s antivirus programs are equipped with these latest techniques.

Virus Scan and Removal is an integral part of any antivirus’ protection scheme. These scans can be auto-scheduled to execute in fixed intervals of time, say, once a week, or, can be manually initiated by the user. He/she can also choose to perform a complete or partial scan of the main drives. A disadvantage of auto-scans is they eat into battery runtime of laptops, netbooks, or smartphones when a charging supply is unavailable and slow down system speed for as long as the scan is on. Also important is how the antivirus responds to a potential threat. It is advisable to set the antivirus to prompt for user action, especially due to the possibility of the program throwing up false positives. For any help with settings and antivirus configuration, you can get in touch with a reputed Antivirus support service.

The safety of your computer is as much your responsibility as it is of the antivirus software. Always exercise caution when opening e-mails from unknown senders, visiting unknown websites, entering critical personal information on unknown Web Pages and downloading attachments. In spite of these measures, if you suspect a virus attack on your PC, contact remote virus removal service immediately.

Web browser safety: Does it really matter?

Posted on 22:46 by Unknown
Browsers are integral to internet surfing. A Browser is an application that renders a web page written in Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML, XHTML) in a format comprehensible to layman. More explicitly, a browser utilizes the ‘source code’ of a web page, a set of instructions in HTML/XHTML, to figure out page layout and design, display of graphics/text and animation. In this post, we will explain how browser security works and what is your role in safe browsing? Contact browser support service for any issues with browser configuration or security.

HTML 5 is the latest standard in developing web page source code and it is steadily gaining popularity among web-developers. On the other hand, choices for web-browsers are aplenty. Google Chrome rules the roost with 37.3 percent of the total Web browser market as per W3C browser usage statistics of March 2012. Firefox comes to the second position with 36.3 percent – a slight difference from Chrome’s share, and then Internet Explorer comes at third with 18.9 percent. Safari holds 4.4 percent share and Opera has 2.3 percent market shares. Most of us use more than one browser, depending on the OS or the device we are working on.

Our choice of browser is for the most part, dictated by its feature set, user interface, speed and performance. Browser security is often conveniently overlooked. Fortunately, all leading browsers provide excellent security features, inclusive of pop-up blockers, anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-phishing protection. In a recent browser-security oriented study by research firm Accuvant labs, Google Chrome is placed at the top of the pack, followed closely by IE, while Firefox lags far behind.

Sandboxing, as used by browsers, is a security measure that limits the access of a web page to system resources and files outside the browser. Both Chrome and IE implement this technique, whereas, Firefox does not. Just-in-time (JIT) hardening prevents compilation of a JavaScript code that cannot be run by the computer, another plus point for Chrome and IE.

When you visit a website, you could be prompted to install a plug-in/add-on to access all website features. Some plug-ins can cause harm to your computer as they install additional software or attempt to access sensitive user data, without your knowledge. Plug-in security keeps such malicious plug-ins in check. Accuvant labs found Chrome offers the best level of plug-in security compared to other browsers. In a separate study by NSS labs, IE topped the browser security test.

Whatever the case maybe, browsers do their part to keep your internet experience safe and secure. But does safe browsing end there? No. User precaution is just as important for browser security as the browser itself, if not more. Users need to exercise restraint in opening e-mails from unverified e-mail addresses as, such e-mails might prompt you to visit phishing websites designed to look authentic. Always remember to verify domain addresses of websites where you are required to enter personal information such as your name, password or credit card details. Often, fraudulent websites are created with slight changes to the URL of the official website. When making online transactions or entering information, ensure the website is supported by HTTPS (Secure HyperText Transfer Protocol), which means all data sent over the internet is encrypted and cannot be intercepted by a third party. You should be able to see ‘https’ on the web address bar and a yellow padlock sign in the browser frame.

As the saying goes, 'Curiosity killed the cat,' we advise you to stay away from suspicious e-mails or websites that claim to make you rich overnight or offer unbelievable discounts. Finally, do upgrade your browser to the latest version and install updates frequently. You can also contact Internet browser support for setting your browser configuration for maximum safety.

Security Applications First
You should install an antivirus with real-time protection and an antispyware in your computer. If you can opt for the paid antivirus then options are Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, Panda, Bitdefender, Webroot, etc. Whereas the good free antivirus tools are AVG Antivirus, Avira Antivir, and Microsoft Security Essentials.

Free and recommended antispyware solutions are Malwarebytes Antimwalware, SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition, Spybot S&D, and Windows Defender. These free tools will not provide the real-time protection but remove all of the hidden & stuck infections, which are even not detected by antivirus.

Are you facing any issue in installing antispyware or antivirus? Do you have any other problem with your security applications? Then get online Antivirus Support from the Microsoft Certified Technicians.

Stay up-to-date
You should update your Operating System, Web browser, and antivirus regularly. Keep your Windows OS and antivirus to get automatic updates from their respective servers. Don’t open unknown emails

If you’re browsing Webmail such as Gmail, Hotmail, AOL Email, Yahoo Mail etc. then don’t open the attachments of emails sent from unknown persons.

Make sure to mark as junk or spam those emails which are not sent by known users. This will let your email client to decide which emails are safe and which are unsecure.

Use the right Web browser
Make sure to use the right Web browser with its upgraded version. Google Chrome specifies the unprotected Websites with a banner before opening it. You can also install the extensions like McAfee SiteAdvisor, Web of Trust (WOT), AVG Browser Security Toolbar, and Avira WebGuard to enhance its security.

Sense Everything
Suppose you’re opening the Website of your bank but suddenly you diverted back to a similar Website asking for complete credit card details with CVV number even without login. In this case, either you have typed a wrong URL or your browser is infected to divert you to an unsafe Website.

Check each and every character you’ve typed in the Web browser before visiting a Website. The phishing Websites are those which shows you the exact snippet of the targeted site with a similar name. Such as go0gle.com is phishing whereas Google.com is good. The only difference is that second O letter has been replaced with 0 (Zero).

You can also browse http://hoaxbusters.ciac.org to check the list of spamming and phishing Websites. The installed secured browser add-ons will also alarm you about an unsecured URL.

If your Web browser is redirecting you regularly to phishing sites then subscribe with online spyware removal support.

We hope that above tips will help you to be safe from online threats. Share your experience of virus threats or unsecured Websites with us and other users.
